City Tours Tours in Peru

Cusco was the capital of the Inca Empire — the largest pre-Columbian civilization in the Americas — and it still wears that history on its streets. Colonial churches stand on Inca foundations. Narrow cobblestone alleys lead to plazas where Spanish and Quechua are spoken side by side. The altitude (3,400 m / 11,150 ft) adds a physical intensity to even a simple walk. Our city tours are led by licensed local guides who grew up in Cusco. They don’t just describe what you’re looking at — they explain why the stones were cut that way, which wall survived the 1950 earthquake intact, and how the city was deliberately planned in the shape of a puma.We offer daytime and night city tours, with different emphases: ruins, markets, gastronomy, and the remarkable Baroque-Andean architecture that emerged when Spanish builders hired Inca stonemasons.

Our city tour options cover every side of Cusco:

  • Classic City Tour + 4 Ruins — The essential Cusco experience: Sacsayhuamán fortress, Qenqo ceremonial complex, Puca Pucara military checkpoint, Tambomachay hydraulic sanctuary, and the golden Qorikancha temple. Covered by the Boleto Turístico Parcial (BTP).
  • Night Experience in Cusco — A walking tour through the old city after dark. Includes the illuminated Plaza de Armas, the San Blas neighborhood, Inca alleyways, a pisco demonstration, and optional stops at a local peña (traditional music venue). This tour shows a completely different side of the city.

Both tours are available in morning, afternoon, and evening slots. Private departures can be arranged for couples, families, or small groups who want a personalized schedule.

Preparation

Physical requirements

City tours involve moderate walking on uneven cobblestone surfaces and some uphill sections. Comfortable walking shoes are essential — flat soles work poorly on wet cobblestones. The main challenge is altitude: Cusco sits at 3,400 m and Sacsayhuamán at 3,750 m. If you've just arrived, you will feel breathless at normal walking pace — this is normal and passes with acclimatization.

No special fitness is required. Guests with mobility limitations should let us know in advance so we can arrange appropriate transportation between sites.

Packing

What to pack

  • Comfortable walking shoes with grip (cobblestones get slippery when wet)
  • Light jacket or fleece — even sunny afternoons can turn cold quickly
  • Rain poncho (small packable type) — afternoon showers are common Nov–Mar
  • Sunscreen SPF 50+ and sunglasses — UV is intense at 3,400 m even on cloudy days
  • Water bottle (1 L minimum)
  • Small cash for entrance fees if BTP is not included in your tour
  • Camera
  • For night tours: warmer jacket (temperatures drop sharply after sunset)

FAQ about City Tours

4
What is the Boleto Turístico del Cusco (BTP) and do I need it?

The Boleto Turístico Parcial (BTP) is the official combined entry ticket for Cusco's archaeological sites, including Sacsayhuamán, Qenqo, Puca Pucara, Tambomachay, and others. It costs approximately S/.70 PEN (about $19 USD) for a partial ticket covering city sites. Our Classic City Tour + 4 Ruins includes the BTP in the price. Check your specific tour page to confirm what's included.

Can I visit Qorikancha without a guide?

Yes, Qorikancha (the Inca Sun Temple, now partially covered by the Church of Santo Domingo) charges a separate entrance fee of approximately S/.15 PEN. Our city tours include a guided visit inside. If you want to visit independently, it's open daily 08:30–17:30 h.

Is the night tour safe in Cusco?

Yes. Our night tour stays in the well-lit and heavily patrolled historic center. We do not enter isolated areas. The tour is led by experienced local guides who know the neighborhood well. Cusco's historic center is generally safe for tourists at night, especially in organized groups. We recommend keeping valuables in inside pockets as a standard precaution.

How far in advance should I book a city tour?

For standard city tours, 24–48 hours advance booking is usually sufficient. However, during Inti Raymi (late June) and the July–August peak season, we recommend booking at least 1 week in advance. Private tours should be booked 3–5 days ahead to guarantee guide availability.
