About this activity

The Palccoyo Mountain Range offers the same geological spectacle as the famous Rainbow Mountain Vinicunca — multicolored mineral formations in green, ocher, blue, white and yellow — with three significant practical advantages: three mountains instead of one, a maximum altitude of 4,900 m (300 m lower than Vinicunca’s 5,200 m), and a 40-minute walk instead of a 2-hour ascent. The site receives a fraction of Vinicunca’s daily visitors.

This full-day tour includes breakfast, lunch and entrance fee — all integrated, no extra costs at the site. The itinerary also covers the Checacupe colonial bridge complex (Inca + Colonial + Republican bridges side by side) and the Four Lagoons circuit (Acopia, Pomacanchis, Posposqo Cocha, Misky Cocha) visible from the Palccoyo ridge.

From $94 per person. Uros Expeditions charges $55 for the group service — no breakfast, limited route (no Four Lagoons circuit or Checacupe bridges). Happy Gringo Tours prices from ~$45 (no meals). Our $94 includes breakfast + buffet lunch + entrance fee + the extended Checacupe stop + a bilingual guide with paramedic certification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Palccoyo better than Rainbow Mountain Vinicunca?

They are different experiences. Palccoyo has 3 mountains, a Forest of Stones, and Four Lagoons viewable in one circuit — more variety and less physical demand. Vinicunca offers a single dramatic summit at 5,200 m with greater altitude and the classic "rainbow stripe" single-mountain composition. Palccoyo is better for travelers with altitude concerns, families with children, or those who want more geological variety. See the Rainbow Mountain Full Day tour for the Vinicunca alternative.

How long is the hike at Palccoyo?

Approximately 40 minutes uphill to the main viewpoint, then 20–30 minutes additional to the Forest of Stones and back. Total hiking time: 1.5–2 hours. The trail is rated easy — no significant elevation gain from the trailhead, mostly flat or gently sloping terrain.

What time does the tour return to Cusco?

Approximately 17:00 hrs at Plaza Regocijo. The long day (05:30–17:00) is primarily driving time — the route to Palccoyo takes ~2.5 hours each way. This is similar to the Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain tour's driving distance.

Can children do the Palccoyo tour?

Yes. Palccoyo is one of the most family-friendly high-altitude tours in Cusco because the hike is short and flat. Children aged 7+ can comfortably complete the walk. Horses are available at the trailhead for younger children or those who prefer not to walk. Consult with your doctor about altitude precautions for children before booking any tour above 4,000 m.

What is the entrance fee to Palccoyo?

Approximately S/. 10–20 PEN (paid to the Palccoyo community cooperative). This fee is included in our $94 tour price — no additional payment required at the gate. Many other operators list it as an extra cost.

Is Palccoyo accessible in the rainy season?

Yes, with conditions. At 4,900 m, Palccoyo is 300 m lower than Vinicunca and receives less snow accumulation. The colors remain visible unless heavy snowfall covers the mineral surfaces — which happens less frequently than at Vinicunca. We monitor conditions and will advise if a specific departure date is at risk. In case of cancellation due to weather, we reschedule or refund.
