About this activity

The Cusco horseback riding tour takes you through the four Inca archaeological sites on the city’s northern edge — Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Puca Pucara and Tambomachay — on Peruvian Paso horses, the official national horse breed of Peru, renowned for their exceptionally smooth lateral gait that eliminates the jolting bounce typical of other breeds. The 4-hour route covers the same ruins as the Cusco city tour, but approached on horseback through open Andean grasslands at 3,500–3,701 m, with stops at each site on foot with the guide and a panoramic photo stop above the city at Chacan Mountain. Our price is $45 USD per person — the same circuit costs $75 at Andino Peru Tours. Tourist ticket (Partial BT-1, S/. 70) is paid separately at the entrance of the first ruin.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the Cusco horseback riding tour cost?

The tour service — horse, muleteer, guide and transport — is $45 USD per person (shared service, max. 12 people). Entrance to the 4 ruins requires the Partial Boleto Turístico (BT-1): S/. 70 PEN (~$19 USD), paid separately. Total all-in cost: approximately $64 USD. Andino Peru Tours charges $75 service fee alone (before tickets) for the same circuit.

Do I need riding experience?

No. The Peruvian Paso is the most beginner-friendly horse breed for this terrain — its smooth four-beat lateral gait eliminates the bounce of a trot. The 15–20-minute briefing at the hacienda covers everything a first-time rider needs. The muleteer rides alongside the group throughout.

What is a Peruvian Paso horse?

The Peruvian Paso (Caballo de Paso Peruano) is the national horse breed of Peru, designated National Cultural Heritage in 1992 and UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2019. It has a natural four-beat lateral gait called the paso llano that produces an exceptionally smooth, gliding ride — significantly more comfortable than standard trail horses, especially for beginner riders.

Is the tourist ticket included?

No. The Partial Boleto Turístico (BT-1, S/. 70 / ~$19) covers entry to all 4 ruins — Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Puca Pucara and Tambomachay. It is purchased separately, either at the ticket office on Avenida El Sol or at the entrance to the first site. If you already have the full Boleto Turístico (S/. 130), the circuit is already covered — inform us when booking.

How long is the tour and what is the distance covered on horseback?

Approximately 4 hours total, with ~3 hours actively riding and ~1 hour on foot at the ruins. Total distance on horseback is approximately 8–10 km through open Andean grassland, passing Chacan Mountain and the spaces between the four archaeological sites.

Can children participate?

Yes — children over 8 years old can ride with parental consent. The horses are calm and the trail is safe. Children ride their own horse (not shared with an adult). Please inform us of children's ages and weights when booking.

What happens if the weather turns bad?

Light rain does not cancel the tour — the ruins are outdoors but the riding route is manageable in light rain with appropriate gear (bring a rain layer). Heavy sustained rain or electrical storm in the mountains results in cancellation with full refund or rescheduling. The guide makes the call on the morning of the tour.

Can I combine this with the Cathedral and Qoricancha?

Yes — the BT-1 covers only the 4 ruins, not the Cathedral or Qoricancha. If you want to see all six sites in Cusco, consider doing the Cusco half-day city tour on a separate day. The horseback tour finishes by 14:00 (morning departure) or 17:30 (afternoon), leaving you time for either Qoricancha or the Cathedral the same day if you purchase a separate ticket.
