About this activity

The Cusco night tour combines two experiences that most visitors book separately — the afternoon city ruins circuit (Qoricancha, Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Puca Pucara, Tambomachay) with the astronomy experience at the Llaullipata Forest Observatory, 3 km above central Cusco in the dark-sky zone near Sacsayhuaman. The circuit ends at twilight; from there, the guide drives the group directly to the observatory for the night sky session. Single booking, single guide, no coordination required. Our price of $66 USD per person covers both experiences — the standalone observatory visit costs approximately S/. 90 (~$24) per person; the city ruins tour with guide costs $15–66 at competing operators. Booking them together with us is both cheaper and logistically simpler.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the Cusco night tour cost?

$66 USD per person. This covers: afternoon city ruins tour (5 sites with guide), transport to the observatory, 2.5-hour astronomy experience (talk + dome projection + telescopes), hot drinks and blankets. Entrance tickets for the ruins (BTP, S/. 70) and Qoricancha (~S/. 15, optional) are paid separately. Total all-in: approximately $66 + $23 = ~$89 USD.

Does the astronomy experience work if it's cloudy?

Yes. The dome projection session runs in all weather — it is an indoor digital projection and does not require a clear sky. Only the outdoor telescope observation depends on weather. On heavily overcast nights, the guide extends the indoor sessions. Rainy season visitors consistently rate the dome experience as worth the trip regardless of cloud cover.

What entrance tickets do I need to buy?

The Partial Boleto Turístico (S/. 70 / ~$19 USD) is needed for the 4 ruins: Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Puca Pucara and Tambomachay. It is purchased at the site entrance — bring cash in soles. Qoricancha has a separate optional entrance (~S/. 15 / ~$4) — you can visit the church exterior for free but the Inca ruins inside require a ticket. If you already have the full Boleto Turístico (S/. 130), the 4 ruins are covered; you only need the Qoricancha ticket if you want to enter.

Is this tour suitable for children?

Yes. Children enjoy both the afternoon ruins (the scale of Sacsayhuaman is impressive to children) and the dome projection — the 360° display is visually engaging regardless of age. For the telescope session, children generally respond well to seeing the Moon's craters and Jupiter's moons in high resolution. Minimum recommended age: 6 years.

Can I skip the afternoon ruins and only join the astronomy?

The tour is sold as a combined experience. If you have already visited the ruins on a previous day, the observatory can be visited as a standalone experience through the Planetarium Cusco directly (~S/. 90 per adult, pickup from Regocijo Square at ~17:40). Our combined tour is designed for visitors who want both in one half-day without separate arrangements.

What are the dark cloud constellations?

Unlike Western astronomy (which identifies constellations by connecting bright stars), the Inca identified constellations in the dark dust lanes of the Milky Way — the dark nebulae that appear as silhouettes against the star field. Key Inca dark cloud constellations include Yacana (the llama), Atoq (the fox), Hanp'atu (the toad) and Yutu (the partridge). From Cusco's latitude, the Milky Way passes nearly overhead and these dark cloud formations are exceptionally visible. The dome projection at Llaullipata shows them overlaid on the actual star field.

What time does the tour end?

Approximately 20:00–20:30 hrs, with drop-off at the Plaza de Armas. This leaves plenty of time for dinner. The guide can recommend restaurants near the drop-off point.
