About this activity
The Maras Moray tour from Cusco in its premium version: the same Sacred Valley circuit that millions of travelers come to Cusco for — the Inca agricultural terraces of Moray, the 5,000-pool Maras Salt Mines — but paired with a live textile weaving demonstration in Chinchero, a gourmet picnic lunch served outdoors with free-roaming llamas and alpacas, and a view of the Verónica glacier (5,682 m) that no restaurant can replicate. Our price is $90 USD — Salkantay Trekking charges $100 for a longer itinerary with a standard restaurant lunch and no picnic.
Why Choose This Tour?
- Chinchero Textile Center (3,762 m) — live natural dye and backstrap loom demo
- Moray archaeological site (3,500 m) — Inca agricultural laboratory, 15°C micro-climate differential
- Maras Salt Mines — 5,000+ terraced pools, active since before the Inca Empire
- Gourmet picnic with free-roaming llamas — Apu Verónica (5,682 m) backdrop

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does the Maras Moray tour with picnic cost?
$90 USD per person (shared service, max. 12 people). This includes: transport, guide, Chinchero textile visit, Maras entrance fee, gourmet picnic with llamas (cheese, bread, fruit, juice, hot drinks, local wine). Not included: Partial Boleto Turístico for Moray (S/. 70 / ~$19 USD), tips and personal expenses.
What is the Partial Boleto Turístico and where do I buy it?
The Partial Boleto Turístico (BTP) is the entrance ticket to Moray archaeological site (and other ruins in the Cusco circuit). It costs approximately S/. 70 PEN (~$19 USD) for foreign tourists and is sold at the ticket booth at the Moray entrance. Bring cash in soles. If you already have the full Boleto Turístico (covers 16 sites), Moray is included — no additional purchase needed.
Are the llamas at the picnic in an enclosure or free?
The llamas and alpacas roam freely in the open-air picnic area — no fences or enclosures. They are domesticated animals accustomed to visitors and will approach the table freely. They can be petted, photographed and hand-fed (the guide advises on what is appropriate). The only practical caution: do not leave food unattended on the table, as they will help themselves.
Can I do this tour as my first day in Cusco?
Yes — this is one of the recommended first-day activities in Cusco. The maximum altitude is 3,762 m (Chinchero), only 362 m above Cusco, with no significant hiking. If you arrived in Cusco the day before and slept reasonably well, you are ready for this tour. If you flew in the same day, one night of rest at 3,400 m before joining any tour is always better.
How does this compare to the standard Maras Moray tour you offer?
Our standard Maras + Moray tour costs $22 and covers Moray and Maras with a guide and transport — no Chinchero, no picnic, restaurant lunch in Urubamba. The premium tour adds Chinchero (45-min weaving demonstration), replaces the restaurant with an outdoor gourmet picnic, limits the group to 12 and includes the Maras entrance fee. If budget is the priority, the standard tour covers the same archaeological sites. If the full experience — including Chinchero textiles and the picnic with llamas — matters, this is the tour.
What is included in the gourmet picnic exactly?
Artisan cheese board (3 types: fresh goat cheese, aged cow cheese, smoked Andean cheese), freshly baked sourdough bread, seasonal fresh fruit (chirimoya, passion fruit or lucuma), natural fruit juice, mineral water, hot drinks (Andean herb tea, coca leaf tea, coffee) and a glass of local wine. Total picnic duration: approximately 1 hour. Dietary adaptations (vegetarian, vegan, lactose-free) available with 48 hours' notice.
Why is the tour non-refundable?
Because the picnic menu is ordered and prepared fresh for each departure — the cheese board, bread and fruit are sourced specifically for each group the morning of the tour. Once this preparation is set, it cannot be reversed. We recommend booking with at least 24 hours' notice and checking weather forecasts for the day.
