Day 02

Day 2: — Professional Photo Session at Machu Picchu + Return to Cusco

First bus or steps (~05:00–06:00 hrs) — Ascent to Machu Picchu with the first access of the day.

~06:00–10:00 hrs — 4-hour photo session at Machu Picchu's iconic spots:

Spot 1: Access Terrace — The classic panoramic viewpoint of the citadel with Huayna Picchu in the background. Sunrise light illuminates the granite walls in golden tones. The photographer knows the exact position to avoid other tourists in the frame.

Spot 2: Agricultural Terraces — The Morning Llamas — Between 06:30 and 08:30 hrs the llamas graze freely on the agricultural terraces. The photographer knows their habitual routes and the best moments for natural photos with the animals.

Spot 3: Sacred Plaza + Intihuatana — Morning lateral light enhances the details of the Intihuatana carving and the mortar-free architecture of the Temple of the Three Windows.

Spot 4: Sun Tower (Circular Tower) — The unique curvilinear architecture of the Inca Empire. Light enters through the trapezoidal windows creating dramatic sun rays inside the tower.

Spot 5: Panoramic Viewpoints — Wide-angle photos of the entire citadel in perspective. The photographer knows the 3–4 viewpoints with the best composition and optimal time for each.

Spot 6 (time permitting): Sun Gate (Inti Punku) — Additional 45-minute walk from the citadel along the Inca Trail route. The most complete perspective of Machu Picchu: the entire citadel framed between the mountains, with the Urubamba Canyon 600 meters below.

~10:00–12:00 hrs — Free time at the citadel.

~12:00–13:00 hrs — Bus down to Aguas Calientes. Free time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I choose the photography style?

Absolutely. During the Day 1 briefing you coordinate with the photographer the style (documentary, portrait, lifestyle, architecture, landscape or combination), poses, priority spots, and any specific photos you want to make sure to get.

What equipment does the photographer use?

Professional full-frame DSLR or mirrorless camera with at least two lenses: wide-angle (16–35mm for landscapes and architecture) and portrait (50–85mm for people photos). The photographer knows the specific lighting conditions of Machu Picchu: morning mist, oblique light, and the sun's direction at each photography spot.

When will I receive the photos?

The edited gallery is delivered within 48–72 hours after the tour via a private download link (Google Drive or WeTransfer). Includes a selection of the best photos (minimum 50 photos) in high-resolution JPEG + all original RAW files.

Can I add Huayna Picchu to this package?

Yes, at extra cost. Huayna Picchu entrance tickets must be reserved 6–12 months in advance — let us know when booking so we can arrange it.

What if it's misty or raining?

Morning mist at Machu Picchu creates extraordinary photographic atmospheres — many of the most widely shared photos of the site are taken in mist. The mist rolls in from the Amazon basin and often clears by 08:00–09:00 hrs, leaving a dramatic sky. Light rain adds visual depth and mood to architecture photos. The tour operates in any weather except official Park closure (rare, only during electrical storms). The photographer adapts techniques to the conditions.

What is the best time of year for Machu Picchu photography?

May–October (dry season) offers clear blue skies and consistent morning light — ideal for architecture and landscape photography. November–April (rainy/green season) produces lush green terraces, dramatic clouds and frequent mist at sunrise — the photographic conditions that create the most atmospheric images of the citadel. Many professional photographers prefer the rainy season specifically for its moody quality. Both seasons produce outstanding photos — the question is style preference (crisp and clear vs. atmospheric and dramatic).

How many people will be at the citadel during our session?

The first entry (06:00 hrs) is the quietest of the day. During high season (June–August) the citadel begins to fill by 08:00 hrs. By 09:00 hrs the main viewpoints are crowded. This is precisely why the 4-hour morning session is structured with the priority shots in the first two hours: the classic access terrace at sunrise, llamas in the early morning mist, and the Sacred Plaza with raking light before the crowds arrive. The photographer knows how to position to avoid other visitors in the frame even when the site is partially busy.

Can I use the photos commercially or on social media?

Yes. You receive full personal use rights for all 50+ edited photos — you can share them on any social media platform, print them, and use them in personal projects. For commercial licensing (advertising campaigns, stock photography, commercial publications), contact us when booking for a commercial rights package.

What happens on Day 1 if my train is delayed?

The Day 1 afternoon train to Aguas Calientes has a set schedule. If your arrival train into Cusco is significantly delayed on Day 1, contact us and we will assess whether the Day 1 transfer to Ollantaytambo needs to be adjusted. The photographer briefing can be conducted at the Aguas Calientes hotel upon arrival even if the train runs late. The priority is always preserving the Day 2 first-entry photo session.
