Itinerary

01
Day 01

Day 1: — Cusco City Tour: Qoricancha, Cathedral and 4 Ruins

09:00 or 13:00 hrs — Hotel pick-up in central Cusco.

Qoricancha — The most sacred temple of the Inca Empire, originally covered with over 700 solid gold plates (2kg each). The Spanish built the Convent of Santo Domingo on its foundations — the Inca walls have survived 14 major earthquakes in 500 years while the colonial walls have been restored multiple times.

Cusco Cathedral — Built over the palace of Inca Viracocha using stones from Sacsayhuaman. Inside: Marcos Zapata's Last Supper painting (1753) where Jesus and the apostles share guinea pig, chicha corn beer and Urubamba trout — Andean cosmology merged with Baroque Catholicism in a single canvas.

4 Archaeological Ruins (Tourist Pass BTP ~S/. 70 required — not included):
- Sacsayhuaman (3,701 m) — 3 zigzag terraced walls of limestone blocks up to 90 tons each, built by 20,000–30,000 workers over 50 years
- Qenqo — Ceremonial labyrinth carved in living rock with divination channels and underground mortuary chamber
- Puca Pucara — Inca military post controlling access from the south
- Tambomachay — Perfect hydraulic system flowing unchanged for 600 years

~18:00 hrs — Return to hotel. Free evening.

02
Day 02

Day 2: — Super Sacred Valley: Moray, Maras, Ollantaytambo, Pisac, Chinchero

06:00–06:30 hrs — Hotel pick-up in Cusco. Departure to the Sacred Valley.

Chinchero (3,762 m) — The most important textile center of the Sacred Valley: complete demonstration of the Inca weaving process with natural dyes (cochineal, muña, achiote) and backstrap loom — the 3,000-year technique that produces the finest Andean textiles in the world.

Moray (3,400 m) — Concentric circular terraces with a 15°C temperature difference between top and bottom. Modern studies confirm they functioned as an experimental microclimate laboratory: the Incas tested crops from 250+ plant species from different ecological zones. (BTP ~S/. 70 not included.)

Maras Salt Mines — More than 5,000 salt pools on terraced slopes, continuously exploited since before the Inca Empire. Salt-rich water flows from an underground spring; community families evaporate it in the sun to collect the pink crystals. (Entrance ~S/. 10 not included.)

Buffet lunch in Urubamba (included).

Ollantaytambo (2,792 m) — The only Inca urban center maintaining its original layout inhabited since the 15th century. The Ollantaytambo Fortress exhibits the largest megalithic blocks of the Empire: 50+ ton red granite monoliths transported 7 km across the Urubamba River.

Pisac — The most colorful craft market in the Sacred Valley: textiles, ceramics, Andean jewelry with negotiable prices.

~18:00–19:00 hrs — Return to Cusco.

03
Day 03

Day 3: — Amazon Route → Aguas Calientes

07:00 hrs — Hotel pick-up. Tourist bus Cusco → Santa Teresa via the Southern Jungle Road (5 hours): the bus crosses Abra Málaga pass (~4,400 m) with views of Verónica glacier, descends the Atlantic slope and reaches the cloud forest.

~13:00 hrsLunch in Santa Teresa (included).

~14:30 hrs — Continuation to Hydroelectric Station (45 min). Start of the 2.5-hour jungle trail (7 km) along the river and railway line: tropical forest, waterfalls, wildlife and first views of Machu Picchu Mountain in the final kilometers.

Alternative: local train Hydroelectric → Aguas Calientes (15 min, additional cost not included).

~17:00–17:30 hrs — Arrival in Aguas Calientes (2,040 m). Check-in at hostel.

~19:00 hrsDinner (included). Guide briefing for Day 4: ascent schedule, access options, Machu Picchu circuit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this package more affordable than other 4-day options?

Because it uses the Amazon route (bus + jungle trail from Hydroelectric Station) instead of the tourist train inbound. The train costs $80–100 USD one way. By eliminating this cost, the package includes 3 full days of tours in Cusco and the Sacred Valley at a price lower than a simple day trip by train.

Is the jungle trail from Hydroelectric to Aguas Calientes difficult?

No. It is 7 km of flat terrain without significant elevation gain, parallel to the river and railway. Anyone with basic fitness completes it in 2.5 hours. It is not a mountain hike — it is a cloud forest walk.

Does this include hotel in Cusco?

The base price of $189 does not include Cusco hotel — it covers only the night in Aguas Calientes (Day 3). For Cusco nights (Days 1, 2 and return), accommodation is on your own account. A Cusco Hotel Variant from $209 (Hotel Hatun Wasi 3★ + airport transfers) is available — ask when booking.

What is the best season for the Amazon route?

May–October (dry season): dry trails, clear views of Verónica Glacier (~5,682 m) from Abra Málaga pass, no road closure risk. The jungle trail from Hydroelectric to Aguas Calientes is compact and easy to walk. November–April (rainy season): the trail becomes muddy after heavy rain and the Cusco–Santa Teresa road occasionally closes after landslides. In rainy season we recommend the train variant — ask for availability and supplement cost when booking.

Can I do this tour if I haven't acclimatized to altitude yet?

Day 1 (City Tour) starts at 3,400 m. If you've just arrived in Cusco, take Day 1 at a relaxed pace. The 4 ruins involve some walking on uneven terrain — rest between sites and stay hydrated. Day 2 (Sacred Valley) descends to 2,792 m (Ollantaytambo), which most people find comfortable even at Day 2. Day 3 and 4 (Amazon route + Machu Picchu) take place below 3,000 m — the lowest-altitude section of the entire trip. This package is actually well-structured for altitude newcomers because the high-altitude activities are concentrated in Days 1–2.

What are the sleeping arrangements in Aguas Calientes?

The base price includes 1 night in a budget hostel in Aguas Calientes with private bathroom. Aguas Calientes is a small jungle town — all hotels are within walking distance of the bus stop and train station. An upgrade to a 3★ hotel (with breakfast) is available as a supplement — ask when booking.

Can I return by train instead of the jungle trail on Day 4?

Yes. The return on Day 4 uses tourist transport from Hydroelectric Station to Cusco (~5 hours). If you prefer to return by train from Aguas Calientes (faster, ~3.5 hours to Cusco), a train supplement of approximately $70–100 USD applies. Request this at booking — train availability is limited and must be confirmed in advance.

What if I want to take Machu Picchu Mountain or Huayna Picchu?

Both require separate tickets booked months in advance (Huayna Picchu: 400 quotas/day; Machu Picchu Mountain: 800 quotas/day). The standard Day 4 itinerary uses Circuit 2 of the citadel, which does not include these peaks. If you want to add either mountain, inform us when booking and we will attempt to secure the additional tickets.

Is this package suitable for budget backpackers?

Yes. This is specifically designed for independent travelers on a budget who want to see the maximum in 4 days without paying for unnecessary extras. You bring your own accommodation in Cusco (any hostel from $8–15/night is fine), and the package handles all the tours, transport and logistics. The $189 price covers everything from City Tour to Machu Picchu return — no hidden costs except the Tourist Pass (~S/. 70) and optional extras.
