About this activity
Waqrapukara (waqra = horn, pukara = fortress in Quechua) is one of the most spectacular and least-visited archaeological sites in the Andes — a pre-Inca fortress built on a dramatic narrow ridge above the Apurímac River canyon, flanked by two natural limestone rock formations that rise like giant horns at 4,300 meters above sea level. Less than 5% of travelers who visit Cusco know it exists.
The site receives a fraction of the visitors at Rainbow Mountain or Machu Picchu — often fewer than 50 people per day, compared to 1,500 daily at Vinicunca. You will likely have sections of the trail entirely to yourself. Our price is $50 USD per person — competitors Salkantay Trekking ($120) and Cusco Native ($125) charge $70–75 more for the same destination and a similar itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does the Waqrapukara tour cost?
$50 USD per person (shared service, max. 16 people). This includes: transport, bilingual guide, Andean breakfast, box lunch, first aid kit and trekking poles on request. A small community entrance fee (~S/. 5–10 / under $3) may be collected at the trailhead — confirm when booking. Total all-in cost: approximately $52–53 USD. Salkantay Trekking charges $120 and Cusco Native charges $125 for the same destination.
How difficult is the Waqrapukara hike?
Moderate. The trail is 5 km round trip with approximately 500 m of elevation gain from the trailhead (~3,800 m) to the fortress (4,300 m), over 2.5 hours. The terrain is open puna grassland for most of the route, with a rocky scramble (hands and feet) for the final approach to the horn towers. No technical climbing equipment is required. The altitude is the primary challenge — not the distance. Two nights in Cusco before the hike is strongly recommended.
How does it compare to Rainbow Mountain difficulty?
Both reach high altitude (4,300 m vs 5,200 m), but Waqrapukara is shorter (5 km round trip vs 6 km on the easy route) and lower (900 m less altitude). The terrain is similar (open grassland + rocky summit section). If you have done the Rainbow Mountain easy route comfortably, Waqrapukara will feel similar but with more solitude and more complex historical content.
Are there any crowds?
Typically under 50 visitors per day — often fewer. This is not a figure of speech. On many days in the shoulder season, you will have the fortress to yourself or share it with one or two other small groups. Compare this to 1,500 daily visitors at Vinicunca.
Is there a Boleto Turístico ticket for Waqrapukara?
No. Waqrapukara is not on the Boleto Turístico (the Cusco tourist pass). Entry is managed by the local community, which collects a small fee (~S/. 5–10) at the trailhead. This is a fraction of the standard Boleto Turístico price (S/. 70–130) and the reason Waqrapukara tourism is less developed than the main circuit — there is less institutional infrastructure supporting it.
What time does the tour start and end?
Hotel pick-up: 05:00–05:30 hrs. Return to Cusco: approximately 17:00–17:30 hrs. Total tour time: approximately 12 hours. The long day is primarily due to the 2.5-hour drive each way to Sangarará — the hiking itself is 4–4.5 hours.
Can I visit Waqrapukara and another tour the same day?
Not practically. The full-day format with 05:00 pickup and 17:30 return leaves no time for same-day combinations. It pairs well with a half-day Cusco city tour the following day (returns by 14:00 or 17:30) — Waqrapukara on Day 1, Cusco ruins on Day 2.
What wildlife might I see?
Vicuñas (wild Andean camelids, protected by law) are frequently seen in the puna section between 3,800 and 4,200 m. Andean condors (wingspan up to 3.2 m) are occasionally visible riding thermals above the Apurímac canyon in the morning hours. Andean foxes appear in the early morning near the trailhead. The guide knows the best viewpoints for each.
