About this activity

The Machu Picchu and Vinicunca 3-day package combines Peru’s two most internationally recognizable landscapes — the ancient Inca citadel and the 7-color mineral mountain — in a single efficient itinerary. On Days 1–2, you travel by tourist train to Machu Picchu and overnight in Aguas Calientes. On Day 3, an early-morning departure takes you to the Rainbow Mountain Vinicunca summit at 5,200 m. Both sites, all logistics, and all guiding in 3 days from Cusco.

Why Choose This Tour?

  • Tourist train Ollantaytambo ↔ Aguas Calientes — 1h40min through Urubamba Canyon
  • Machu Picchu (2,430 m) — UNESCO World Heritage Site + New 7th Wonder
  • Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain (5,200 m) — Peru’s 7-color mineral mountain
  • 4 km hike to the summit — 870 m elevation gain from the trailhead

Itinerary

01
Day 01

Cusco → Ollantaytambo → Tourist Train → Aguas Calientes

07:00–07:30 hrs — Hotel pick-up in Cusco. Tourist transport to Ollantaytambo through the Sacred Valley (~1h30min drive).

Ollantaytambo (2,792 m) — Brief stop at the town, which serves as the main tourist train departure point for Machu Picchu. Time permitting, a short walk through the Inca canchas (the original 15th-century residential blocks still inhabited today) is included. The Ollantaytambo Fortress above the town — six platforms of megalithic red granite — can be visited with the Tourist Pass BTP (not included) if you depart on a later train.

~17:30–18:00 hrsTourist train (PeruRail Expedition class, included) departs Ollantaytambo. The 1h40min journey through the Urubamba Canyon is one of South America's most scenic rail routes:

  • Ollantaytambo (2,792 m) → the train descends steadily into the narrowing canyon
  • Km 88 (~2,490 m) → classic Inca Trail starting point (28 km, 4 days to Machu Picchu by trail)
  • Wiñay Wayna area → cloud forest begins, orchids and bromeliads visible on canyon walls
  • Aguas Calientes (2,040 m) → arrival in the subtropical valley town

In the last 40 minutes of the journey, the vegetation becomes fully subtropical and Machu Picchu Mountain appears above the treeline. Large panoramic windows on both sides of the train.

~19:30–20:00 hrs — Arrival in Aguas Calientes (2,040 m / Machu Picchu Pueblo). Hotel check-in. The guide provides the Day 2 briefing: bus schedule, Machu Picchu entry time, which circuit to follow, and key sites to see first.

Free evening — Dinner at own account. Aguas Calientes has a lively restaurant scene along the main river avenue: local trout (trucha), Andean stews, pizza and international options. Optional: thermal baths (Baños Termales, ~S/. 20, 10 min walk from the train station) — volcanic hot springs excellent for legs tired from travel.

02
Day 02

Machu Picchu + Return to Cusco

Early morning — Consettur bus from the plaza in Aguas Calientes (included, departs from 05:30 hrs, 25 min ride) or stair hike (1h30min, ~1,700 steps, free option).

~06:00–07:00 hrs — Entry to Machu Picchu Archaeological Park (2,430 m / 7,970 ft)

2-hour guided visit — MINCETUR bilingual guide, Circuit 2 (the complete standard route):

Classic access terrace — The first viewpoint delivers the world's most recognized panorama: the citadel on its mountain saddle, agricultural terraces cascading down the mountainside, Huayna Picchu rising steeply on the eastern side, and the Urubamba canyon dropping 1,000 m on three sides. At 2,430 m — nearly 1,000 m lower than Cusco — most travelers notice they breathe considerably easier here than in the city.

Intihuatana (hitching post of the sun) — A carved granite gnomon at the highest elevation of the ceremonial complex. The only intact example in the Inca Empire — all others were destroyed by the Spanish as symbols of Andean religion. Its survival is owed entirely to the fact that Machu Picchu was never found by the colonizers.

Temple of the Three Windows — Three enormous trapezoid windows overlooking the main plaza. Mortarless stonework: each stone's edges are individually shaped to interlock with its neighbors, with no two joints aligned. After 600 years of tropical humidity, cold nights and dozens of earthquakes, not a single stone has shifted.

Sun Tower (Torreón) — Circular astronomical observatory. Two windows align precisely: one to the June solstice sunrise, one to the December solstice. Sunlight enters on the solstice and strikes a carved stone marker on the floor — the Inca solar calendar made physical.

Temple of the Condor — A natural rock formation carved to represent the Andean condor (Vultur gryphus, wingspan up to 3.2 m) in flight. The stone wings spread 6 meters. Below: an underground ritual chamber. The condor was the Inca symbol of the upper world (Hanan Pacha).

Agricultural terraces — 700+ terraces with a 3-layer drainage system (gravel, sand, topsoil) that prevents erosion on steep slopes and creates multiple microclimates. About 20 resident llamas maintain territories here — direct descendants of the animals kept by Inca workers and clergy.

Historical context:
- Built ~1438 AD under Pachacútec (the 9th Sapa Inca, who also built the Temple of the Sun in Cusco)
- Abandoned ~1540 — before the Spanish ever reached the Sacred Valley — probably due to epidemic disease that spread ahead of direct European contact
- Overgrown by cloud forest for ~370 years
- Rediscovered July 24, 1911 by Yale professor Hiram Bingham III, guided by farmer Melchor Arteaga and an 11-year-old local boy
- UNESCO World Heritage Site: 1983
- New Seven Wonders: 2007

~09:00–11:30 hrs — Free time at the citadel. Options for extended time: Circuit 3 (adds the Sun Gate, Inti Punku, 45 min walk at 2,720 m), Circuit 4 (the most complete, 3 hrs), or extended photography at the classic panorama terrace.

~12:00 hrs — Consettur bus down to Aguas Calientes. Lunch (own account, ~S/. 25–50 depending on restaurant choice). Afternoon free: artisan market, Machu Picchu Museum (free with park ticket — pre-Columbian ceramics, original Bingham expedition photographs), town center walk.

~14:30 or 17:00 hrs — Return tourist train Aguas Calientes → Ollantaytambo → tourist bus → Cusco.

~21:00 hrs — Arrival in Cusco. Hotel (own account or included depending on booking — confirm). Rest in preparation for the early departure of Day 3.

03
Day 03

Rainbow Mountain Vinicunca

04:00–04:30 hrs — Hotel pick-up. The early departure is non-negotiable: the trailhead is 3+ hours from Cusco, and the summit is best at 09:00–11:00 am before clouds build up.

Drive to Cusipata → Pampachiri (3h) — South from Cusco through the Quispicanchi highlands, past the Ausangate massif (6,384 m — the highest peak in the Cusco region, visible from the road at dawn), and up a rough track to the Pampachiri parking area (~4,200 m). Light breakfast served here (included) at a community stall before the hike.

Chillihuani (4,330 m) — The official trailhead and quota control point. Trek registration required.

Hike to Vinicunca Summit (4 km, 870 m elevation gain, ~2 hrs) — A steady ascent through ichu grassland (Stipa ichu, the highland bunchgrass that covers this landscape). The trail is not technical — no ropes, no exposed ridge walking, no scrambling — but the altitude (4,330 m → 5,200 m) makes everyone breathe harder and walk slower than normal. Horse rental (~S/. 70–80) is available at the trailhead for those who want support. The guides carry emergency oxygen.

Vinicunca — Rainbow Mountain (5,200 m / 17,060 ft) — The summit ridge reveals the multicolored mineral formation that has made this location one of the most-shared natural photographs on social media since 2015. In direct morning light, the stripes are vivid: red-orange iron oxides (hematite), yellow sulfur deposits, green chlorite, white calcium carbonate, maroon clay minerals.

Why was Vinicunca hidden until 2015? The colors were covered by glacier ice and permanent snow until accelerating glacial retreat exposed the mineral surface. Within months of the exposure becoming visible, local communities and trekking operators began bringing visitors. Within two years, Vinicunca had become the most-searched natural attraction in Peru.

Panoramic views from the summit:
- Ausangate (6,384 m) to the northeast — the dominant peak in the Vilcanota range
- Condoriqui and Ayachinca peaks to the south
- Herds of vicuña (Vicugna vicugna) — smallest member of the camelid family, wild, protected — often visible on the upper slopes
- Quechua herder communities with alpacas at the lower elevations

~13:00–14:00 hrs — Descent to the trailhead. Hot lunch (included) at a community restaurant near Pampachiri. Tourist transport returns to Cusco.

~17:00–18:00 hrs — Arrival in Cusco. End of service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do this tour without prior acclimatization in Cusco?

You can, but it is not recommended. The Rainbow Mountain hike on Day 3 goes to 5,200 m. Travelers arriving in Cusco on Day 1 morning and departing immediately on this tour have had only 24 hours at 3,400 m before reaching the summit at 5,200 m — insufficient acclimatization for many people. Minimum recommended: 2 nights in Cusco before starting this tour. If you have only 1 night, let us know your arrival date and we can advise.

Is 3 days enough for Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain?

Yes — if you have 2 prior nights in Cusco for acclimatization. Days 1–2 cover the Machu Picchu train journey and guided visit. Day 3 covers Rainbow Mountain. Both are full experiences without being rushed. The only days that do not have a major activity are the travel days (the train ride on Day 1 and the drive on Day 3 are scenic in themselves).

What is the best season for this combination?

April–October (dry season): best conditions for both Machu Picchu (clear morning views, less fog) and Rainbow Mountain (sharp mineral colors, reliable trail). November–March (rainy season): both sites remain open. Machu Picchu in cloud is atmospheric; Rainbow Mountain colors are still visible but the hike may be muddy. High season (June–August) for both sites requires booking 30–60 days ahead minimum.

Can I extend this to 5 days with Cusco City Tour and Sacred Valley?

Yes — that is the structure of our Cusco + Sacred Valley + Machu Picchu 5-Day Package. The 5-day version adds a Cusco City Tour, a full Sacred Valley day (Pisac + Maras + Moray + Ollantaytambo), airport transfers and 4 nights accommodation. Contact us on WhatsApp for a quote combining both.

How far in advance should I book?

For Machu Picchu: 30+ days ahead during high season. For Rainbow Mountain: 48–72 hours is often sufficient (no official quota system), but we recommend booking together with Machu Picchu as far ahead as possible for best train time options.

Is a private version of this tour available?

Yes — private transport and guide for your group exclusively, running on your schedule. Available for 2–10 people. Contact us on WhatsApp for private pricing.

Why book with Travel Peru Tours?

We are 100% local Cusco-based operators. We manage Machu Picchu ticket purchases, train reservations, hotel coordination and Rainbow Mountain logistics in a single booking. Our MINCETUR guides have specialist expertise at both sites. For availability and booking, contact us on WhatsApp.
