About this activity

The Machu Picchu 2-Day Tour by Train is the relaxed version of the Machu Picchu experience: instead of a 19-hour rush from Cusco and back in a single day, you travel to Aguas Calientes on Day 1, spend the evening at leisure, and enter Machu Picchu at sunrise on Day 2 — with the entire morning available at the citadel before a comfortable afternoon return to Cusco.

Day 1 focuses entirely on the journey: the tourist bus through the Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo, then the Expedition train through the Urubamba Canyon cloud forest to Aguas Calientes. The train is the experience — 90 minutes of descending subtropical canyon scenery that the day trip rushes through at 04:00 in darkness on the outbound leg. On this tour, you arrive in daylight, check in, explore Aguas Calientes at your own pace, and sleep at 2,040 m (nearly 1,400 m lower than Cusco — many travelers notice they sleep better here).

From $399 per person. Happy Gringo Tours prices their 2-day Machu Picchu by train at $425 per person (max 10 group). Our $399 shared service covers the same inclusions — Expedition/Voyager train, 1 night accommodation, Consettur bus, entrance ticket and MINCETUR guide — at $26 less per person for groups up to 16.

Why Choose This Tour?

  • Expedition tourist train Ollantaytambo ↔ Aguas Calientes — most scenic rail in South America
  • 1 night in Aguas Calientes (2,040 m) — relaxed acclimatization before Machu Picchu
  • Sunrise entry to Machu Picchu — first bus 05:30, citadel at 06:00
  • 2-hour guided visit with MINCETUR bilingual guide (Circuit 2)
  • Free time: thermal baths, Mandor Gardens, Aguas Calientes restaurants

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the 2-day tour more expensive than the day trip if it's "just adding one night"?

The overnight adds: train seat on a daylight schedule (vs dark outbound on day trip), accommodation, breakfast, and the time to use the first entry slot at 06:00 (vs arriving at 10:00 on the day trip). The sunrise entry and reduced crowds genuinely change the quality of the citadel visit. The $79 premium over the day trip covers the hotel, breakfast and the scheduling logistics.

Can I upgrade the train to Vistadome?

Yes, on either the outbound or return leg. The Vistadome adds panoramic roof windows and an observation section. On this 2-day tour, the outbound is in daylight — an upgrade on the outbound is worthwhile since you actually see the canyon. The Vistadome outbound upgrade is +$75 per person.

When should I book this tour?

Book at minimum 30 days ahead, 60–90 days for June–August peak season. Machu Picchu entrance tickets have a daily capacity limit. We confirm ticket availability before processing your reservation.

Is there a train directly from Cusco to Aguas Calientes?

No direct train from Cusco city. All trains to Machu Picchu depart from Ollantaytambo (1h45min bus from Cusco) or Poroy (30min from Cusco — limited schedule, premium trains only). Our tour uses Ollantaytambo as the departure point, which is standard for all shared tour operators.

What if Machu Picchu entrance tickets are unavailable for my date?

We confirm ticket availability before purchasing. If your preferred date is sold out, we offer alternative dates. If you book without checking and tickets are unavailable for any circuit, a 90% refund is processed within 15–30 days.

Is Circuit 2 guaranteed?

Circuit 2 (main complete circuit) is subject to availability — the most requested and often the first to sell out. If Circuit 2 is unavailable, we offer Circuit 1 (shorter) or Circuit 3 — we notify you before confirming the booking.
