About this activity
The Humantay Lake tour from Cusco takes you to one of the Andes’ most spectacular glacial lakes in a single full day: a turquoise gem at 4,200 m fed by the glaciers of Nevado Salkantay (6,271 m), the highest and most sacred mountain in the Cusco region. The round-trip hike is 5 km from the Soraypampa trailhead (3,800 m) — approximately 1.5 hours up, 1 hour down — through high-altitude grasslands with panoramic views of the Salkantay glacier. Our $35 USD price includes everything: tourist transport, Andean breakfast in Mollepata, Andean lunch, Humantay Lake entrance ticket, trekking poles, blankets and a bilingual MINCETUR guide. Other operators charge $65–$100 for the same route; we keep costs low because we are a local Cusco operator with no intermediaries. Departure at 04:30 hrs, return to Cusco ~18:30 hrs.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does the Humantay Lake tour from Cusco cost?
The Humantay Lake tour costs $35 USD per person in shared service (max. 16 people). This includes: tourist transport, Andean breakfast in Mollepata, Andean lunch, Humantay Lake entrance ticket, trekking poles, blankets and bilingual MINCETUR guide. The only optional extra is horse rental (~S/. 90 PEN), paid directly to community members at the trailhead.
How difficult is the Humantay Lake hike?
The hike is rated easy to moderate. Distance: 2.5 km each way (5 km round trip) with approximately 400 m of elevation gain from 3,800 m to 4,200 m. The gradient is steady rather than steep, and the trail is well-marked. The main challenge is altitude, not distance. Most people in average fitness who have acclimatized 1–2 days in Cusco complete the hike without significant difficulty. For those who prefer not to hike, horses are available at the trailhead.
How long is the full tour from Cusco?
The complete tour is approximately 14 hours door-to-door: hotel pick-up at 04:30 hrs, return to Cusco at ~18:30 hrs. Of those 14 hours, approximately 3.5 hours are spent at altitude (Soraypampa + hike + lake), 1.5 hours at Mollepata (breakfast and lunch), and the remainder in transport.
Is the Humantay Lake entrance fee included?
Yes. The Humantay Lake entrance ticket is included in our $35 USD price. Always verify what operators include before booking — some advertise lower prices that exclude the entrance fee, payable separately at the site gate.
Can I rent a horse for the Humantay Lake hike?
Yes. Horses are available at the Soraypampa trailhead for approximately S/. 90 PEN per person for the ascent only, paid directly to local community families. Horses are not available for the descent — the return is always on foot. Horse rental is not included in the tour price.
How does Humantay Lake compare to Rainbow Mountain?
They are very different experiences. Humantay Lake (4,200 m) features a turquoise glacial lake with an easy-moderate 2.5 km hike — ideal for families and first-time high-altitude hikers. Rainbow Mountain (5,200 m) features a multicolored mineral mountain with a harder 3 km hike at 1,000 m more altitude. Both cost $35 USD and include breakfast, lunch and entrance. Humantay has fewer crowds; Rainbow Mountain is more internationally famous. See the comparison table above.
What is the best season to visit Humantay Lake?
May through October (dry season) delivers the clearest skies and most intense turquoise color. June and July are peak international season with excellent conditions. September and October offer the same quality with slightly fewer crowds. November through April is rainy season — tours operate, but trails can be muddy and views may be partially obscured by mist.
Is the Humantay Lake tour suitable for children?
Yes, with considerations. The hike is suitable for children 6 years and older who are in good health and have acclimatized in Cusco. The altitude (4,200 m) is more accessible than Rainbow Mountain (5,200 m), making it a better choice for families. For younger children or those with concerns, horses are available at the trailhead. Always consult a doctor before bringing young children to high altitude.
Can I do Humantay Lake if I have never hiked before?
Yes. The trail to Humantay Lake is one of the most accessible high-altitude hikes near Cusco. No prior hiking experience is needed — you need adequate acclimatization (1–2 nights in Cusco before the tour) and a reasonable level of general fitness. The guide sets the pace for the slowest member of the group, with regular rest stops throughout.
What is the spiritual significance of Laguna Humantay?
In Andean cosmology, Laguna Humantay is a sacred site at the foot of Apu Salkantay — the most powerful mountain deity of the Cusco region. Quechua communities make ritual offerings (Pago a la Tierra) at the lakeshore: coca leaves, flowers, seeds and chicha presented to the lake and the Apu. This ceremony is actively practiced today by the Soraypampa and Mollepata communities. Our guide explains the ceremony's meaning; visitors are invited to participate respectfully.
Can I combine Humantay Lake with Machu Picchu?
The Salkantay Trek (5 days) visits Humantay Lake on Day 1 and arrives at Machu Picchu on Day 4 — the complete high-altitude alternative to the Inca Trail. If you only have 2 days, consider combining the Humantay Lake full day (Day 1) with a Machu Picchu full-day tour (Day 2) — though rest between the two is strongly recommended.
