About this activity

The Rainbow Mountain easy route reaches Vinicunca via the Qesyuno trailhead on the Pitumarca side — the highest road access point to Vinicunca at approximately 4,700 m. Starting at that altitude means the hike to the summit is roughly 30 minutes of steady uphill walking rather than the 1.5–2 hours required from the standard Chillihuani trailhead at 4,300 m. The same iconic mineral color bands — red, yellow, green, white and lavender striped across the summit at 5,200 m — but with a fraction of the physical effort. This tour is best for travelers who are concerned about their fitness for the standard route, prefer a lighter hiking day, or want the option of a horse for part of the ascent. Our price is $35 USD — the same as the standard route — and significantly less than competitors charging $100–$160 for routes that are longer and harder.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the easy route and the standard Rainbow Mountain tour?

The standard route departs from Chillihuani (trailhead ~4,300 m) with a 3 km hike taking 1.5–2 hours to reach Vinicunca (5,200 m) — rated Moderate. The easy route departs from the Qesyuno trailhead (~4,700 m) with a ~1 km hike taking approximately 30 minutes — rated Easy–Moderate. Both reach the same summit with the same view. The easy route is $35 (same price) and better suited to travelers who are less physically fit, prefer shorter hikes, or want the horse option as a realistic alternative.

How much does the Rainbow Mountain easy route cost?

$35 USD per person in shared service. This includes: tourist transport, Vinicunca entrance ticket, Andean breakfast, buffet lunch, bilingual guide and emergency oxygen. Not included: Red Valley entrance (~S/. 10), horse rental (70 soles), tips and personal expenses.

Do I need to rent a horse?

No. The Qesyuno route is short enough that most travelers in reasonable health complete the 30-minute hike on foot. The horse is an option, not a requirement. The guide will never pressure you to rent one. If you have knee issues, altitude discomfort or simply prefer it, the horse covers most of the uphill section — you still walk the final 10–15 minutes to the summit viewpoint (horses are not permitted at the very top).

Is the easy route suitable for older adults?

Yes, with appropriate preparation. Travelers in their 60s and 70s participate regularly. The key factors are: acclimatization (at least 1–2 nights in Cusco at 3,400 m before the tour), pace (the guide walks slowly — no rushing), and the availability of emergency oxygen and a horse as backup options. The 30-minute hike from Qesyuno is genuinely manageable for older adults who are mobile and have no serious cardiovascular conditions. If in doubt, consult your doctor before booking.

Does the easy route include the Red Valley?

Not in the main route. The Red Valley entrance (~S/. 10 soles) is an optional paid detour at the trailhead area. It can be visited after the summit descent if time and energy permit. If you want the Red Valley as a primary part of your experience (not just a short stop), consider the ATV Rainbow Mountain tour which routes directly through the Red Valley.

How does this compare to what Salkantay Trekking or Alpaca Expeditions offer?

Salkantay Trekking charges $100+ for a Rainbow Mountain tour starting at 4,630 m with a 7 km hike (rated Moderate). Alpaca Expeditions charges $160 for a route rated "Challenging" with ~2 hours of hiking. Our easy route is $35 for a 30-minute hike from a comparable starting altitude. We are a local Cusco operator — our prices are direct, without OTA commissions inflating the cost.

What is the altitude at the trailhead vs. the summit?

Qesyuno trailhead: approximately 4,700 m (15,420 ft). Vinicunca summit: 5,200 m (17,060 ft). The 500 m vertical gain is covered in approximately 30 minutes on the easy route versus 900 m gain over 1.5–2 hours on the standard route. Both involve arriving at 5,200 m and the altitude effects are the same at the summit.

Is the Vinicunca entrance ticket included?

Yes. The Vinicunca (Montaña de 7 Colores) entrance ticket is included in the $35 price. The Red Valley entrance is not included and is optional (~S/. 10 PEN at the site).

Can I do this tour with only 1 night in Cusco?

One night is the minimum — not ideal, but travelers do it. Two nights is strongly preferred. If you arrive in Cusco with severe altitude symptoms (persistent vomiting, inability to walk), postpone the tour. Altitude sickness at 5,200 m can become serious. With 1 night of acclimatization, the shorter hike of the easy route gives you a better chance of a comfortable experience than the standard 3 km route.
