About this activity
The Rainbow Mountain ATV tour is the most adventurous way to reach Vinicunca: instead of the standard 3 km hike from the Chillihuani trailhead, you ride a quad bike (ATV) for 70 minutes through open puna grasslands, crossing the Red Valley of Lauramani (~4,700 m) before a 45-minute final hike to the Vinicunca summit at 5,200 m. The route is completely different from the standard hiking tour — you approach from Japura base rather than Chillihuani, which means you pass through the Red Valley on the way rather than as an optional paid detour. Our price of $133 USD includes the ATV, helmet, gloves, Andean breakfast in Quiquijana, buffet lunch and a bilingual MINCETUR guide. Entrance tickets to Vinicunca and the Red Valley are paid separately at the site (bring cash in soles). Departure at 03:40 hrs, return to Cusco approximately 17:30–18:00 hrs.
Why Choose This Tour?
- Quiquijana (~3,600 m) — Andean breakfast village
- Japura ATV base (~4,000 m) — start of ATV ride
- Red Valley of Lauramani (~4,700 m) — pure hematite canyon
- Vinicunca / Rainbow Mountain (5,200 m) — the summit
Itinerary
Day 01
Itinerario
Itinerario
Cusco → Quiquijana → Japura Base → Red Valley → Vinicunca → Cusco
03:40–04:00 hrs — Hotel pick-up in Cusco (3,400 m)
The guide picks up each participant at their hotel in Cusco's historic center. The early departure at 03:40–04:00 hrs serves two purposes: arriving at breakfast at dawn and beginning the ATV ride in the best morning light, before the main tourist groups (who depart from Cusipata at 06:00+) crowd the Vinicunca area.
~06:30 hrs — Quiquijana (3,600 m) — Andean Breakfast
Arrival at Quiquijana, ~100 km south of Cusco, after approximately 2.5 hours of driving. Andean breakfast included at a local restaurant: hot dishes, fruit, artisan bread, scrambled egg, coffee, coca leaf tea and fresh juice. ~45 minutes for breakfast and preparation.
~08:00 hrs — Japura ATV Base (~4,000 m) — Practice Session
Arrival at the Japura ATV base. The instructor assigns ATVs according to each rider's build and weight. 15–20-minute practice session: acceleration, braking, turning on uneven terrain and safety protocol. The guide explains the route ahead, the terrain sections and what to do if you need to stop.
If for any reason a participant decides not to ride the ATV after the practice session, they can continue to Vinicunca in the support vehicle.
~08:30–10:00 hrs — 70-Minute ATV Ride to the Red Valley (~4,700 m)
The ATV convoy departs from Japura. The guide leads on a motorbike, setting the pace. The route climbs from 4,000 m to 4,700 m over 70 minutes through open puna, ridge traverses and increasingly dramatic volcanic terrain. By the time the Red Valley comes into view, you have covered approximately 15–20 km of mountain trail.
~10:00–10:15 hrs — Red Valley of Lauramani (~4,700 m)
Brief stop at the Red Valley entrance for photography of the pure-hematite canyon before the final climb. The contrast between the deep red of the valley walls and the blue Andean sky is one of the most intense color contrasts in the Andes.
~10:15–11:00 hrs — Final Hike: 45 Minutes to Vinicunca (5,200 m)
The hike from the Red Valley approach to the Vinicunca summit is approximately 1 km at 45 minutes, gaining ~500 m in altitude from the 4,700 m starting point. It is shorter and less steep than the standard 3 km hike from Chillihuani. The guide maintains a slow, steady pace — at 5,200 m the altitude is the dominant factor, not the distance.
Entrance tickets to Vinicunca (paid at the site ticket booth in soles) are required here.
~11:00 hrs–12:00 hrs — Vinicunca Summit (5,200 m)
Approximately 1 hour at the summit for:
- Photographing the mineral color bands with the Red Valley visible below and the Ausangate glacier (6,384 m) on the horizon
- Guide explanation of the geology and Andean cosmology of Apu Ausangate
- Rest and acclimatization at altitude
- Upper viewpoint walk (+10 min, broader panorama)
By this time, you arrived via a route most other visitors have never seen — the Vinicunca crowd is concentrated on the Chillihuani side.
~12:00 hrs — Descent and ATV return (~30 min ride)
Descent on foot to the ATV area (~40 minutes), then 30-minute ATV return ride to the Japura base — faster going downhill.
~14:00 hrs — Buffet Lunch (included)
Full buffet lunch at a restaurant near the base: Andean soups, main course, dessert and hot drinks.
~15:00 hrs — Return to Cusco
Transfer back to Cusco arriving at approximately 17:30–18:00 hrs. Drop-off at Cusco's historic center. End of service.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does the Rainbow Mountain ATV tour cost?
The Rainbow Mountain ATV tour costs $133 USD per person in shared service (max. 15 people). This includes: tourist transport, ATV ride (70 min + 30 min return), helmet, gloves, Andean breakfast, buffet lunch and bilingual guide. Not included: Vinicunca entrance ticket, Red Valley entrance ticket (both paid at the site in Peruvian soles) and tips.
Do I need ATV experience to join this tour?
No prior experience is required. The ATVs are semi-automatic (no gear shifting — throttle and brake only) and the instructor provides a 15–20-minute practice session before departure. The guide on a motorbike leads the group at a controlled pace. If at any point during the practice session you feel uncomfortable, you can opt for the support vehicle instead — no refund is issued for this decision, so please assess your comfort before booking.
Can I ride if I weigh more than 90 kg?
Yes, but you must inform us at booking. Participants over 90 kg are assigned a reinforced ATV model with higher load capacity. Failure to inform us in advance may result in an ATV assignment that is not appropriate for your weight.
How long is the actual hike in this tour?
45 minutes uphill from the Red Valley approach to the Vinicunca summit, plus approximately 40 minutes downhill. The total hiking distance is approximately 2.5 km round trip — significantly less than the standard 6 km round trip from Chillihuani. The gradient is moderate but the altitude (4,700 → 5,200 m) means the effort is still substantial.
Are the Vinicunca and Red Valley entrance tickets included?
No. Both entrance tickets — for Vinicunca (Montaña de 7 Colores) and for the Red Valley of Lauramani — are paid separately at the ticket booths at each site in Peruvian soles. Check current prices with us when booking and bring the exact cash amount. There are no ATMs or card readers on the route.
How does this ATV tour compare to others in the market?
Most competing ATV tours to Rainbow Mountain use a 25–30 minute ATV ride from the Cusipata area to near the standard Chillihuani trailhead — essentially replacing the minivan for a short section. Our tour uses a 70-minute ATV route from Japura that approaches Vinicunca from the opposite side, passing through the Red Valley as part of the main route rather than as a paid optional detour. If you want a brief ATV experience to reduce hiking time, shorter-route tours are cheaper. If you want the full off-road adventure with the Red Valley included, this is the better option.
What is the best season for the ATV tour?
May through October (dry season): firm, dry ATV trails, stable weather, most vivid mineral colors. This is strongly recommended. November through April (rainy season): the ATV trails can be muddy and some sections may be challenging. Tours operate year-round but the rainy season experience is meaningfully different from the dry season.
Is this tour suitable for older adults or people with health conditions?
The ATV section requires basic hand coordination and the ability to stay seated on an ATV in motion. The 45-minute hike at 5,200 m requires good cardiovascular health. The tour is not recommended for people with uncontrolled heart or respiratory conditions, severe hypertension or pregnancy. Older adults in good health who have acclimatized properly participate regularly. We always recommend consulting a doctor before any high-altitude activity.
What happens if I can't ride the ATV on the day?
If after the practice session you decide not to ride the ATV, you can continue to Vinicunca in the support vehicle. No refund is issued in this case — the ATV equipment cost is absorbed in the tour price regardless of use. If this is a concern, consider the standard hiking tour at $35 instead.
