About this activity

The Rainbow Mountain tour from Cusco is the most photographed full-day excursion in the region: Vinicunca (5,200 m), the geological wonder of the Vilcanota mountain range whose natural stripes of red, green, yellow, white and purple have made it one of the most shared landscapes in the world. Unlike operators advertising $20–23 prices that exclude the entrance ticket and meals, our $35 USD package includes everything: tourist transport, Andean breakfast, buffet lunch, Vinicunca entrance ticket, trekking poles and bilingual guide. Maximum 16 people per departure for a more personal experience. The hike is ~6 km round trip from the Chillihuani trailhead (~4,300 m) to the summit at 5,200 m. Departure at 04:00 hrs, return to Cusco around 17:00 hrs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the Rainbow Mountain tour from Cusco cost?

The Rainbow Mountain tour from Cusco costs $35 USD per person in shared service (max. 16 people). This price includes: tourist transport, Andean breakfast in Cusipata, buffet lunch, Vinicunca entrance ticket, trekking poles and bilingual guide. The Red Valley entrance (~S/. 10 PEN) and horse rental (~S/. 70 PEN) are optional and paid at the site.

How difficult is the Rainbow Mountain hike?

The hike is rated moderate to hard. The distance is approximately 3 km each way (6 km round trip) with 900 m of elevation gain from 4,300 m to 5,200 m. The main challenge is altitude — not distance. At sea level, 6 km is an easy walk. At 4,300–5,200 m, the reduced oxygen makes every step more demanding. People in average fitness who have acclimatized for 2+ days in Cusco typically complete the hike without significant difficulty. For those with concerns, horses are available at the trailhead.

Is the Rainbow Mountain entrance ticket included?

Yes. The Vinicunca entrance ticket is included in our $35 USD price. Many operators advertise $20–23 prices that do not include the entrance fee (~S/. 30–40 PEN extra at the site). Always check what is included before booking — hidden fees at the destination are common in this route.

What time does the Rainbow Mountain tour start?

Departure from Cusco hotels is at 04:00–04:30 hrs. This early start is deliberate: it allows arrival at the trailhead before the majority of tour groups and reaching the summit between 09:00 and 10:00 hrs — when crowds are smallest and the morning light is ideal for photography. Groups departing at 06:00–07:00 hrs arrive at the summit at peak crowd time (11:00–13:00 hrs).

Can I visit the Red Valley on the same day?

Yes. The Red Valley of Lauramani is a 30-minute walk from the Vinicunca summit ridge. It requires an additional entrance fee of approximately S/. 10 PEN (paid at the site gate) and is not included in the tour price. The Red Valley is dominated by high-concentration hematite that gives it an all-red appearance distinct from Vinicunca. It has significantly fewer visitors than the main summit and offers dramatic photographic perspectives. If time and energy allow, it is strongly recommended.

What is the best month to visit Rainbow Mountain?

May through October (dry season) offers the most reliable conditions: clear skies, dry trails and fully visible mineral colors. June and July are the most popular months globally. September and October offer similar conditions with slightly smaller crowds. November through April is rainy season — the mountain may be partially or fully snow-covered, which can hide the colors. The tour operates year-round; in rainy season the guide assesses conditions the morning of departure.

Can I do Rainbow Mountain without prior acclimatization?

It is not recommended. At 5,200 m, the oxygen concentration is approximately 50% of sea level. Without at least 2 days of acclimatization in Cusco (3,400 m), the risk of altitude sickness — headache, nausea, extreme fatigue — is significant. In severe cases, altitude sickness requires immediate descent. Our guides carry emergency oxygen, but prevention through acclimatization is always more effective than treatment at altitude.

Can children visit Rainbow Mountain?

We do not recommend the Rainbow Mountain tour for children under 8 years old due to the altitude (5,200 m) and the length of the hike. For families with young children, the Palccoyo Mountain tour offers the same colored mountain landscape at 4,900 m with only a 40-minute flat walk — a much more family-friendly option with the same visual experience.

Is it possible to rent a horse for the hike?

Yes. Horses are available at the Chillihuani trailhead for approximately S/. 70 PEN per person, paid directly to local community members. The horse carries you to a point close to the summit — the last ~200 meters are always on foot due to the rocky summit terrain. Horse rental is not included in the tour price.

What does "Vinicunca" mean?

Vinicunca comes from the Aymara language and can be interpreted as "place of colors" (wina = color, qunqa = place) or "mountain of two colors." The popular name "Rainbow Mountain" and "7 Colors Mountain" are tourist designations that emerged after its viral spread in 2015–2017. The local Pitumarca communities also know it as Apu Vinicunca — recognizing it as an Andean mountain deity. As an Apu, the mountain is considered a living entity in Andean cosmology, a protector of the surrounding communities and a conduit to the spiritual world.
