About this activity
The Rainbow Mountain tour from Cusco is the most photographed full-day excursion in the region: Vinicunca (5,200 m), the geological wonder of the Vilcanota mountain range whose natural stripes of red, green, yellow, white and purple have made it one of the most shared landscapes in the world. Unlike operators advertising $20–23 prices that exclude the entrance ticket and meals, our $35 USD package includes everything: tourist transport, Andean breakfast, buffet lunch, Vinicunca entrance ticket, trekking poles and bilingual guide. Maximum 16 people per departure for a more personal experience. The hike is ~6 km round trip from the Chillihuani trailhead (~4,300 m) to the summit at 5,200 m. Departure at 04:00 hrs, return to Cusco around 17:00 hrs.
Why Choose This Tour?
- Cusipata (3,600 m) — Andean breakfast stop
- Chillihuani (~4,300 m) — trailhead
- Vinicunca / Rainbow Mountain (5,200 m) — the summit
- Red Valley — optional 30-min detour from the summit

Itinerario
Itinerario
Cusco → Cusipata → Vinicunca → Cusco
04:00–04:30 hrs — Hotel pick-up in Cusco
The guide picks up each participant directly at their hotel in Cusco's historic center (Plaza de Armas, San Blas, Wanchaq). For accommodations in narrow streets like San Blas, the guide coordinates a nearby meeting point the night before. The early departure in a tourist minivan allows arrival at Cusipata before sunrise and the start of the hike in morning light — the best window for photography. If your stomach allows, a light snack before departure helps; the full Andean breakfast is served in Cusipata.
~06:00 hrs — Cusipata (3,600 m) — Andean Breakfast
Arrival in the village of Cusipata, 100 km south of Cusco on the Cusco–Sicuani highway. Andean breakfast included at a local restaurant: artisan bread, corn tortillas, fried or scrambled egg, fresh cheese, jam, hot coffee and coca leaf tea. The coca tea is particularly important at this altitude — it gently opens the bronchi, stimulates circulation and is the most effective traditional Andean remedy for altitude acclimatization. Time in Cusipata: ~45 minutes.
~07:00 hrs — Chillihuani (~4,300 m) — Trailhead
Continue by minivan on the dirt road to the Chillihuani trailhead (~4,300 m), home to the Quechua shepherds of the Pitumarca community. Here trekking poles are distributed (included), participants make final preparations (sunscreen, layering up, water bottle) and the guide conducts the safety briefing: slow pace, constant hydration, altitude sickness warning signs.
For those who prefer not to hike: horses are available at the trailhead for ~S/. 70 PEN per person, paid directly to local community members. Horses carry you to a point near the summit — the last ~200 meters are always on foot due to rocky terrain.
~07:30–09:00 hrs — The Hike: 3 km, +900 m elevation gain, ~1.5 hrs
The ascent from Chillihuani follows a well-marked trail that millions of hikers have walked before you. The landscape shifts progressively:
- First km: golden puna grassland (ichu), small crystal-clear streams fed by glacial melt, llamas and alpacas grazing freely alongside the trail
- Middle km: the mountain begins to change color — vegetation thins, terrain becomes mineral and clay-rich, the first hints of color appear on the slopes above
- Final 500 m: the steepest section — less oxygen, the most physical effort — but the payoff is the first full view of the Rainbow Mountain ridge from the crest
The guide maintains a comfortable pace with rest stops and explains the geology, the high-altitude flora (Asteraceae species, cushion plants, ichu), the Andean cosmology surrounding Ausangate and the history of the Pitumarca community whose families manage the site.
~09:00–10:00 hrs — Vinicunca Summit (5,200 m)
The Rainbow Mountain ridge delivers one of the most dramatic panoramas in the Andes: the mineral color bands in the foreground, the Red Valley of Lauramani to the south, the glacier of Nevado Ausangate (6,384 m) on the horizon, and on clear days the full chain of the Vilcanota range. Free time of ~1 hour for:
- Photographing the color bands from multiple angles (best in direct morning light, 09:00–10:00 hrs)
- Walking along the ridge for different perspectives
- Visiting the upper viewpoint (+10 min, views into the Red Valley)
- Guide explanation of geology and Andean cosmovision
Optional — Red Valley (Valle Rojo): From the Vinicunca ridge there is a 30-minute trail descending into the Red Valley of Lauramani. Additional entrance: ~S/. 10 PEN (paid at the site gate). The Red Valley is dominated by pure hematite in high concentration — an all-red landscape that contrasts dramatically with the multicolored Vinicunca. Far fewer visitors, more dramatic for photography, and absolutely worth it if you have the time and energy.
~10:30 hrs — Descent to Chillihuani (~1 hour)
The descent follows the same trail. Trekking poles are particularly useful here for the knees. The mountain colors shift in character as the sun rises higher — the late-morning light reveals different shades than the morning light of the ascent.
~11:30 hrs — Lunch in Cusipata (included)
Return to Cusipata for a buffet Andean lunch at the local restaurant: Andean soup, main course with rice and grilled trout or chicken, purple corn juice (chicha morada) and coca leaf tea. Time to warm up and refuel before the return drive.
~13:00 hrs — Return to Cusco
Transfer back to Cusco on the main highway. The guide uses the drive for Q&A about the day's experience, and can suggest next-day itineraries based on your remaining time in Cusco.
~17:00 hrs — Arrival in Cusco
Drop-off at Plaza Regocijo or San Francisco in Cusco's historic center. End of service.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does the Rainbow Mountain tour from Cusco cost?
The Rainbow Mountain tour from Cusco costs $35 USD per person in shared service (max. 16 people). This price includes: tourist transport, Andean breakfast in Cusipata, buffet lunch, Vinicunca entrance ticket, trekking poles and bilingual guide. The Red Valley entrance (~S/. 10 PEN) and horse rental (~S/. 70 PEN) are optional and paid at the site.
How difficult is the Rainbow Mountain hike?
The hike is rated moderate to hard. The distance is approximately 3 km each way (6 km round trip) with 900 m of elevation gain from 4,300 m to 5,200 m. The main challenge is altitude — not distance. At sea level, 6 km is an easy walk. At 4,300–5,200 m, the reduced oxygen makes every step more demanding. People in average fitness who have acclimatized for 2+ days in Cusco typically complete the hike without significant difficulty. For those with concerns, horses are available at the trailhead.
Is the Rainbow Mountain entrance ticket included?
Yes. The Vinicunca entrance ticket is included in our $35 USD price. Many operators advertise $20–23 prices that do not include the entrance fee (~S/. 30–40 PEN extra at the site). Always check what is included before booking — hidden fees at the destination are common in this route.
What time does the Rainbow Mountain tour start?
Departure from Cusco hotels is at 04:00–04:30 hrs. This early start is deliberate: it allows arrival at the trailhead before the majority of tour groups and reaching the summit between 09:00 and 10:00 hrs — when crowds are smallest and the morning light is ideal for photography. Groups departing at 06:00–07:00 hrs arrive at the summit at peak crowd time (11:00–13:00 hrs).
Can I visit the Red Valley on the same day?
Yes. The Red Valley of Lauramani is a 30-minute walk from the Vinicunca summit ridge. It requires an additional entrance fee of approximately S/. 10 PEN (paid at the site gate) and is not included in the tour price. The Red Valley is dominated by high-concentration hematite that gives it an all-red appearance distinct from Vinicunca. It has significantly fewer visitors than the main summit and offers dramatic photographic perspectives. If time and energy allow, it is strongly recommended.
What is the best month to visit Rainbow Mountain?
May through October (dry season) offers the most reliable conditions: clear skies, dry trails and fully visible mineral colors. June and July are the most popular months globally. September and October offer similar conditions with slightly smaller crowds. November through April is rainy season — the mountain may be partially or fully snow-covered, which can hide the colors. The tour operates year-round; in rainy season the guide assesses conditions the morning of departure.
Can I do Rainbow Mountain without prior acclimatization?
It is not recommended. At 5,200 m, the oxygen concentration is approximately 50% of sea level. Without at least 2 days of acclimatization in Cusco (3,400 m), the risk of altitude sickness — headache, nausea, extreme fatigue — is significant. In severe cases, altitude sickness requires immediate descent. Our guides carry emergency oxygen, but prevention through acclimatization is always more effective than treatment at altitude.
Can children visit Rainbow Mountain?
We do not recommend the Rainbow Mountain tour for children under 8 years old due to the altitude (5,200 m) and the length of the hike. For families with young children, the Palccoyo Mountain tour offers the same colored mountain landscape at 4,900 m with only a 40-minute flat walk — a much more family-friendly option with the same visual experience.
Is it possible to rent a horse for the hike?
Yes. Horses are available at the Chillihuani trailhead for approximately S/. 70 PEN per person, paid directly to local community members. The horse carries you to a point close to the summit — the last ~200 meters are always on foot due to the rocky summit terrain. Horse rental is not included in the tour price.
What does "Vinicunca" mean?
Vinicunca comes from the Aymara language and can be interpreted as "place of colors" (wina = color, qunqa = place) or "mountain of two colors." The popular name "Rainbow Mountain" and "7 Colors Mountain" are tourist designations that emerged after its viral spread in 2015–2017. The local Pitumarca communities also know it as Apu Vinicunca — recognizing it as an Andean mountain deity. As an Apu, the mountain is considered a living entity in Andean cosmology, a protector of the surrounding communities and a conduit to the spiritual world.
